چکیده

The 21-cm probability distribution function (PDF; i.e. distribution of pixel brightness temperatures) is expected to be highly non-Gaussian during reionization and to provide important information on the distribution of density and ionization. We measure the 21-cm PDF as a function of redshift in a large simulation of cosmic reionization and propose a simple empirical fit. Guided by the simulated PDF, we then carry out a maximum likelihood analysis of the ability of upcoming experiments to measure the shape of the 21-cm PDF and derive from it the cosmic reionization history. Under the strongest assumptions, we find that upcoming experiments can measure the reionization history in the mid to late stages of reionization to 1–10 per cent accuracy. Under a more flexible approach that allows for four free parameters at each redshift, a similar accuracy requires the lower noise levels of second-generation 21-cm

The Difference PDF of 21-cm Fluctuations: A Powerful Statistical Tool for Probing Cosmic Reionization

A new generation of radio telescopes are currently being built with the goal of tracing the cosmic distribution of atomic hydrogen at redshifts 6-15 through its 21-cm line. The observations will probe the large-scale brightness fluctuations sourced by ionization fluctuations during cosmic reionization. Since detailed maps will be difficult to extract due to noise and foreground emission, effort...

The Theory and Simulation of the 21-cm Background from the Epoch of Reionization

The redshifted 21-cm line of distant neutral H atoms provides a probe of the cosmic “dark ages” and the epoch of reionization (“EOR”) which ended them, within the first billion years of cosmic time. The radio continuum produced by this redshifted line can be seen in absorption or emission against the cosmic microwave background (“CMB”) at meterwaves, yielding information about the thermal and i...

Studying the sources of cosmic reionization with 21-cm fluctuations

We explore the ability of measurements of the 21-cm power spectrum during reionization to enable the simultaneous reconstruction of the reionization history and the properties of the ionizing sources. For various sets of simulated 21-cm measurements, we perform maximum likelihood fits in order to constrain the reionization and galaxy formation histories. We employ a flexible six-parameter model...

Cosmic Reionization and the 21cm Signal: Simulations and Analytical Models

We measure several properties of the reionization process and the corresponding low-frequency 21-cm signal associated with the neutral hydrogen distribution, using a large volume, high resolution simulation of cosmic reionization. The simulation involving 24 billion dark matter particles utilizes a hybrid code with a particle-mesh N-body algorithm for dark matter and prescriptions for baryons a...
